Established in 1961, QuinTron is the pioneer and leader in breath testing in clinical, research and hospital settings. QuinTron breath tests are the industry standard for identifying SIBO and sugar malabsorption testing trusted by leading medical institutions and researchers alike.
Neurovanna’s quality control exceeds manufacturer’s recommendations with machinery calibrated after every two hours or 5th test run. Testing is performed on a CLIA-waived QuinTron BreathTracker™ Digital MicroLyzer H+. A parallel measurement of carbon dioxide (CO2) is obtained with each sample to allow for greater testing precision. All samples are processed using a CO2 correction factor technique that reduces errors and improves interpretation.
SIBO Hydrogen Methane Breath Tests
Lactulose and Glucose
Both lactulose and glucose hydrogen methane breath tests can be used to determine the presence of small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). These tests follow the same protocol of collecting 10 breath samples over 3 hours, which can be easily done at home. However, the lactulose challenge requires a prescriber to order. Additionally, both tests offer the Total SIBO Bacterial Load™, allowing for further personalized diagnostics and treatment.
The glucose breath test is absorbed quickly in the small intestine so any early gas production (hydrogen or methane) indicates bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine. The lactulose breath test can detect bacterial overgrowth further down the small intestine and provides information on colon gas activity, but requires more clinical interpretation to avoid false positives.
We offer three hydrogen methane breath tests for determining malabsorption: fructose, lactose, and sucrose. Depending on patient symptoms, you may choose to assess the malabsorption of multiple sugars.
Testing for sugar malabsorption, such as lactose, fructose and/or sucrose intolerance helps identify if digestive symptoms (like bloating, gas, diarrhea) are due to the body’s inability to properly digest certain sugars, allowing for more targeted dietary modifications to alleviate symptoms.
Indications
Fructose & Lactose
Abdominal pain
Bloating
Flatulence
Diarrhea (commonly mistaken for irritable bowel syndrome)
SIBO and Malabsorption Testing for Better Clinical Outcomes
Assessing SIBO and sugar malabsorption is clinically relevant as it identifies the root causes of chronic digestive symptoms, such as bloating, pain, and irregular bowel movements, which can significantly impact overall health. By pinpointing these issues, healthcare providers can implement targeted treatments—like dietary changes, herbals, probiotics, or antibiotics—to restore gut function, enhance nutrient absorption, and address underlying imbalances. Treating these root causes not only optimizes digestive health but also improves energy levels, mental clarity, and quality of life, contributing to optimal health and long-term wellness.
