Description
Fructose Malabsorption Product.
This is a simple, non–invasive, breath test that measures for fructose sugar malabsorption. This is a 3-hr long test with 4 breath samples collected (baseline and 1 every hour after drinking lactose solution).
The most common causes of fructose malabsorption include; a genetic error of hepatic enzyme aldolase B synthesis, incomplete fructose absorption in which the capacity of the gut to transport fructose across the intestinal epithelium is exceeded and this may be caused by disease/ disorders that causes intestinal damage; such as celiac disease.
Fructose absorption capacity varies widely within the population with estimates that up to 50% of the U.S. population is unable to absorb 25 g of pure fructose. In clinical trials, the researcher found that up to 80% of healthy controls were unable to absorb a 50g fructose load.
Symptoms of fructose malabsorption include abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence and diarrhea which is commonly mistaken for irritable bowel syndrome, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and/or fungal overgrowths. Many people with fructose malabsorption can tolerate up to 25g of fructose and may need to improve health with additional nutritional counseling and/or digestive support.
Preparation diet (1-2 days) and a 12-hr fast are required.
